5 Things Paralegals Can Ask for OTHER Than a Raise (that will actually elevate your career in the long run)
A raise is a common request by paralegals for career advancement. As paralegals, we often aren’t able to look outside of the paralegal title, failing to recognize the plethora of career advancement opportunities that are waiting for us.
While I certainly understand that a request for a raise is typically a well justified and desperately needed one (in this economy, especially). Paralegals should be looking at other ways their law firms can prepare them for career elevation.
The requests outlined below will have a long-term impact on your career progression, increase job satisfaction, and set the stage for higher-paying opportunities within or outside of your current firm. So let’s explore several strategies that paralegals can employ to propel their careers forward.
Professional Development Opportunities
Request opportunities for professional development, which can encompass a wide range of activities, such as:
- Mentorship: Seek guidance and mentorship from experienced attorneys to gain insights into the legal profession, develop your skills, and expand your network.
- Further Education: Request support for pursuing additional education, such as certifications or advanced degrees, CLEs, and online courses to enhance your qualifications and career prospects. Before making this request, it would be ideal for you to understand your “North Star” ideal job, as well as explore paralegal specializations that lead to six figure and beyond earnings. This will help you carve out a clear path for yourself as to where your continuing education focus should be, before you make those requests to your employer.
- Cross-Training: If your firm has you stuck in one of their many practice areas, ask to work in different practice areas to broaden your skillset and versatility. This is especially useful if the additional practice area is commonly seen paired with your current expertise (i.e. estate planning with probate and trust administration, patents with trademarks).
2. Title Change
Let’s face it, a vast majority of paralegals (especially those that are working in small and solo firms, are performing responsibilities that would consititute a title that other firms are currently paying six-figure salaries for (i.e. Paralegal Manager, Director of Operations, eDiscovery Specialist, etc.). If this is the case for you, it is in your absolute best interest to request an official title change (like, yesterday).
Proposing a title change not only recognizes your contributions but also positions you for career growth. When other firms out there have a job opening, you will stand out as a more ideal candidate if you can showcase that job title on your resume. As you start to navigate towards your “North Star” ideal job, you want to be able to start developing your resume to completely align with that job, and showcase it!
3. Networking Opportunities
Request access to networking events, legal conferences, and bar association meetings. Building a strong professional network can open doors to new opportunities and higher-paying positions.
It is true in both business and career development, you usually are only one person away from connecting with someone that is going to help you experience a major breakthrough in your goals.
4. Responsibility Expansion
Demonstrate your ability to handle more significant responsibilities within your role. Request challenging tasks and projects that allow you to grow professionally.
Ideally, you will encompass an “intrepreneur” mindset (a person within a corporation who takes direct responsibility for turning an initiative into a profitable finished process through assertive innovation") as you approach your boss with this proposal, and both you AND your law firm will benefit greatly as a result.
Whatever you choose to undertake in terms of improving your law firm, you are able to quantify your unique innovation that employers are desperate to see in their applicants. (Learn more about this HERE)
5. Flexible Work Arrangements
Request flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or flexible hours, to achieve better work-life balance and reduce stress, which can positively impact your long-term career.
Personal development and mental health are absolutely vital for us to be able to advance our careers. In order for us to show up to our careers as the best version of ourselves, we need to feel well balanced, internally and externally organized, and ensure we are not only focusing on our mindsets but also our health-sets, soul-sets, and heart-sets (5 AM Club - Own Your Morning, Elevate Your Life).
Conclusion
While a salary increase is a common request, paralegals have various other options to advance their careers. These requests not only improve your current role but also position you favorably for higher-paying positions within your firm or elsewhere.
Remember, a successful legal career isn't just about the money; it's also about personal and professional growth. So, don't hesitate to advocate for your own advancement by asking for opportunities that will propel your career forward.
